Place Value
Image created in Microsoft Excel and edited with Microsoft Paint
The VALUE of a digit is determined by the position it is in within a number.
For example, in the number 5,687,413, the 7 is worth
"7 thousands" or 7,000.
PLACE VALUE RULES
-Beginning with the ones place at the right, each place value is multiplied by 10. For example, the value of the third place on the right is "hundred", the value of the place to the left of it is "thousand," which is 10 times 100. The place to the right of the hundreds place is tens, which is 10 times 1, and so forth.
-Commas are used to separate each group of three digits, which is called a period.
[Millions] , [Thousands] , [Hundreds] ----> The "periods" are shown in brackets.
-When a number is written like the example below, it is in standard form.
Example- 5,789,321
-When a number is written like the example below, it is in written form. Written form is written in words exactly like you say it with commas after each period (millions and thousands).
Example- five million, seven hundred eighty-nine thousand, three hundred twenty-one
-When a number is written like the example below, it is in expanded form. Expanded form shows the value of each digit.
Example- 5,000,000 + 700,000 + 80,000 + 9,000 + 300 + 20 + 1
For example, in the number 5,687,413, the 7 is worth
"7 thousands" or 7,000.
