Addition and Subtraction Fact Families
A number fact is made up of 3 numbers. These 3 numbers can be used to make up other number facts. Using the numbers 4, 7, and 11, we can make two addition and two subtraction problems.
4 + 7 = 11
7 + 4 = 11
11 - 7 = 4
11 - 4 = 7
4 + 7 = 11
7 + 4 = 11
11 - 7 = 4
11 - 4 = 7
Commutative Property for Addition
Changing the order of numbers (addends) will NOT change the sum (answer for addition).
Example: 4 + 3 = 7 and 3 + 4 = 7
Example: 4 + 3 = 7 and 3 + 4 = 7
Multiplication and Division Fact Families
A number fact is made up of 3 numbers. These 3 numbers can be used to make up other number facts. Using the numbers 4, 8, and 32, we can make two multiplication and two division problems.
4 x 8 = 32
8 x 4 = 32
32 / 8 = 4
32 / 4 = 8
4 x 8 = 32
8 x 4 = 32
32 / 8 = 4
32 / 4 = 8
Commutative Property for Multiplication
Changing the order of numbers being multiplied will NOT change the product (answer for multiplication).
Example: 4 x 3 = 12 and 3 x 4 = 12
Example: 4 x 3 = 12 and 3 x 4 = 12
